Taste buds decrease in number with advancing age; taste sensitivity to sweet and salt are usually reported to decline with age. Smoking results in decreases in bitter sensitivity and denture wearers may notice a decrease in taste sensitivity when dentures are worn. Poor oral hygiene may affect taste by physical impairment caused by debris on the taste buds, and taste fatigue due to decaying material stimulating the senses. A decrease in the sense of smell with aging may be related to taste acuity. Taste acuity changes have important implications for nutrition counseling of older individuals. (rkm)
