An economic evaluation of weed control methods used in combination with crop rotation: a stochastic dominance approach

Extract: Experimental results from a 10-year herbicide use and crop rotation study provided the data for an analysis of weed control cropping systems. Stochastic dominance was used to rank the various systems. Results indicate that regardless of weed control method a rotation of two years corn and one year soybeans was the most preferred. Systems which substituted cultivation for herbicide use were least preferred. Successively altering herbicides on an annual basis as compared to applying a single major herbicide was found to increase both net returns and risk and would be preferred only by growers who were mildly risk preferring.
