Soil Strength and Seedling Emergence Relations II. A Generalized Relation for Gramineae

The relation between soil strength, as measured with a penetrometer, and emergence of corn, onions, barley, wheat, switchgrass, and rye seedlings was determined in laboratory studies. This relation was approximately similar for all gramineae used in these tests. Emergence percentages decreased slightly as penetrometer soil strengths increased to the range of 6 to 9 bars. As soil strengths further increased, gramineae seedling emergence decreased until no emergence occurred above the range of 12 to 18 bars strength. Oxygen concentrations ranging from 7 to 42% did not alter the soil strength-seedling emergence of a grain sorghum. Emergence of onions, a monocotyledonous species but not a gramineae, was prohibited by 2 bars of penetrometer soil strength.
