An overview paper discusses the potential effect on the food industry of 3 of the 8 dietary guidelines proposed for Australia. These 3 guidelines represent recommendations for reduced intakes in the areas of fat, refined sugar, and salt. The rationale and potential food industry impacts for these 3 guidelines are individually addressed. Data on the consumption of various foods containing fat and sugar are presented. (wz)
