Examination of Hungarian bred Persian walnut cultivars’ resistance to frost

Knowledge of ecological demands is essential to find the optimal growing site of fruit species and cultivars. In the case of cultivars adapted to the Hungarian climate conditions, late spring frosts could cause serious damages and could decrease the effectiveness of fruit growing. Hungarian bred Persian walnut cultivars were evaluated between October 2013 to March 2014 and October 2014 to March 2015 in order to determine their frost hardiness. During this research period we set up frost hardiness tests using a climate chamber of the Budapest Corvinus University of Department of Pomology. In particular, three Hungarian basic cultivars (Milotai 10, Alsószentiváni 117 and Tiszacsécsi 83), four Hungarian novel bred varities (Milotai bőtermő, Milotai intenzív, Milotai kései and Alsószentiváni kései) and Chandler, an internationally grown cultivar, were included in the analysis.
