Selection strategy for yield improvement in garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) under cold arid conditions of Ladakh

Genetic variability, heritability genetic advance and correlation coefficient of eight quantitative characters in 11 genotypes of pea were studied during the cropping season of 2001 and 2002 under the cold arid conditions of Kargil. High estimates of genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation were recorded for plant height and seed yield. The characters plant height, seed yield number of pods per plant and days to 50% flowering exhibited high heritability and plant height and seed yield also showed high genetic advance too. The seed yield showed significant and positive genotypic and phenotypic correlation with plant height and number of pods per plant and positive significant genotypic correlation with number of branches per plant. Study indicated that improvement in seed yield in pea can achieved through selection of traits viz. plant height, number of pods per plant and number of branches per plant under cold arid climate.
