Effect of ethychlozate on fruit maturity in 'Nishimura-Wase' persimmon (Diospylos kaki L.)

Ethychlozate, a plant growth regulator, was applied to ‘Nishimura-Wase’ persimmon to advance fruit maturity. Ethychlozate was sprayed twice, at 74 and 100 days after full bloom. Ethychlozate applied at the rate of 40 or 80 ppm promoted fruit coloration. In the middle of the harvest period, ethychlozate treatment at 40 and 80 ppm increased the percentage of ripened fruit, by 21 and 29 % respectively as compared to the untreated. No difference was observed in the fruit size, firmness and soluble solids content among the experimental plots at harvest, however, shelf life tended to extend. Ethychlozate treatment caused rolling of leaves immediately after the first application. Defoliation increased by 21.3 % at 40 ppm and 47.8 % at 80 ppm respectively, while that of untreated was 5.2 %. Judging from the percentage of defoliation, the concentration of 40 ppm was recommended, although the concentration of 80ppm was more effective in advancing fruit maturity.
