Hot Water Immersion Effective for Scarifying Seeds of Tephrosia vogelii

Immersion in hot water baths at 50 to 56 C for 5 to 30 minutes significantly increased the germination percentage of seeds of Tephrosia vogelii as compared to tapwater soaks and mechanical scarification. Immersion for 5 minutes at 54 C induced 96% germination with a minimum of seed swelling. Thiram fungicide, when added to the hot water bath, applied as a cool slurry after hot water immersion or applied as a dust to seeds cooled and dried after hot water immersion, had no deleterious effects on seed germination.
