Lateral pressures during filling of a full-scale grain bin

Lateral pressures were measured in two different corrugated walled grain bins using load cells mounted on the wall at discrete locations. Bin A was 12.8 m (42 ft) in diameter and 17.1 m (56 ft) tall while bin B was 11.0 m (36 ft) in diameter and 14.0 m (46 ft) tall. Tests were conducted with corn. The lateral pressures measured in the 12.8 m diameter bin were only slightly larger than those measured in the 11.0 m diameter grain bin. In the 12.8 m diameter bin, the largest average lateral pressure was 28.2 kPa (589 lb/ft2) at a grain depth of 15.2 m (49.9 ft) while in the 11.0 m diameter grain bin the largest average lateral pressure was 26.9 kPa (562 lb/ft2) at a grain depth of 11.9 m (39.1 ft). Best fit values of micro and k were determined using Janssen's equation and the SAC OLIN procedure. For Bin A values of 0.6 and 0.52 were determined for mu and kappa, respectively. For Bin B best fit values of 0.55 (mu) and 0.52 (kappa) were determined. For both bins, the pressures estimated during filling by both EP433 and DIN1055 were slightly larger than the lateral pressures measured by the load cells for almost all grain heights. For these conditions, EP433 produced a slightly more conservative design at large grain heights than that of DIN1055.
