In an altitudinal soil transept from 2900 m (at the edge of La Malinche Park) to 2700 m (farmland, ejido San Jose Teacalco), three soil profiles were taken on the southeastern hillside to determine whether there is a possible relationship between biological activity and some soil indicators (texture, pH, organic matter content, erosion, and the anthropogenic factor in the agricultural area). Biological activity was determined by measuring the activity of dehydrogenase (DHA) without the addition of a substrate, and the activity of dehydrogenase glucose (DHAG) and dehydrogenase malate (DHAM) activity with the addition of glucose and malic acid as substrate, respectively. The results showed that the texture of the soils, erosion and organic matter content played an important role in the activity of DHA, while DHAG and DHAM indicated loss of easily biodegradable organic matter, up to 10 cm deep, possibly by surface runoff. Soil pH increased the activity of these enzymes. Farming practices (anthropogenic factor) had a negative influence on DHA, but DHAG and DHAM increased, indicating larger losses of organic matter as a consequence of this factor.
