In the present study, mineralization of nitrogen in the form of nitrates under zero, minimum and conventional tillage systems was evaluated in fertilized and non-fertilized plots in the production of corn forage in the Lagunera Region, located in northern Mexico. The results of the present study correspond to the year 1999 and they show the data of the fifth year of experimentation under the same farming process and nitrogen fertilization. An experimental split block design with six treatments and three replications was used, taking into account humidity, temperature, soil depth, nitrate, and forage production factors for the statistical analysis. The results show that the content of nitrate in the soil was higher at a depth of 0-7.5 cm (31.7 mg kg(-1), on average) than at a depth of 7.5-15 and 15-30 cm (11.5 and 9.2 mg kg(-1), respectively). It is assumed that this is because the microorganisms that participate in its transformation are obligated aerobic. Temperature is proportionally inverse to soil depth which indicates that the bacteria in charge of transforming N into nitrate are mesophyllic. Consequently, the highest quantity of NO3-N was present in the split plots with fertilizer application but very close to the soil surface, during the intermediate sampling of the crop, in minimum and conventional tillage systems. The highest production of corn forage was obtained in the plots prepared under conventional tillage with approximately 33 t ha(-1), and the smallest was obtained under no-tillage system without fertilizer with 17 t ha(-1).
