The treatment and care of stoma patients in Great Britain emphasizes a personal approach, considering the route by which he arrived in surgery, severity of disease, need for good communication with patient and family, positive attitude to rehabilitation, interaction with health care personnel and contact with supportive groups for patients with ileostomies, colostomies or urinary conduits. Particular problems of stoma care involve the pre-operative siting of the stoma, finding appropriate appliances, and learning about diet. Medication can have a heightened effect on a shortened bowel, particularly those affecting the sympathetic nervous system. Radiotherapy or chemotherapy can cause nausea and bowel irritation. All of these problems may be present in an aggravated form in the terminally ill patient.
