Genetic variability studies in cowpea

The genetic variability was studied in 20 genotypes of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.). Walp.) for yield and related characters in a field experiment in randomized block design with three replications during summer season, 2011. The results showed significant differences among the genotypes evaluated for all the characters. A wide range of variation was observed among the genotypes for all the character. The phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation were higher for plant height, pod length, average pod weight, pod yield per plot, number of seeds per pod and number of pods per plant along with high heritability estimates and high expected genetic advance, indicating the addictive gene effects. Selection for such traits might be useful for development of varieties. Character association indicated that average pod weight, pod length, leaf area, number of seeds per pod, number of cluster per plant, number of pods per plant, number of pods per cluster, plant height and protein content had significant positive correlation with the pod yield per plot. The characters pod length, plant height, primary branches per plant, number of pods per cluster and average pod weight had showed positive direct effect on the pod yield. Thus these characters will serves as good indices for selection of superior genotype.
