New estimates of fibre in the diet in Britain
1984
Wenlock, R.W. | Buss, D.H. | Agater, Irena B.
Intake estimates of dietary fiber in Britain based on more current figures for fiber content are needed. This report compares the effect of new analyses of the fiber content of food to previous calculations of average daily intake of fiber. Using a new fractionation technique, total fiber intake figures increased from 19.8 g/person/day to 22.2 g/person/day. The new analytic methods are able to measure more pentose and hexose non-cellulosic polysaccharides than were the former methods. This results in an increase of 52% in the pentose fraction and 70% in the lignin fraction of the British diet, based on 1982 consumption figures. (emc)
