We evaluated the carcinogenic potential of Dacthal, an important herbicide, and its biodegradation product, tetrachloroterephthalic acid, on the basis of their chemical and biological properties as well as by a variety of computational tools. We concluded that tetrachloroterephthalic acid does not present any substantial carcinogenic risk and that the observed rodent carcinogenicity of Dacthal is probably due to its impurities.
