A critical account is presented on various aspects of the characteristics and use of citrus fruits. Citrus fruit topics covered in detail include: classification, breeding, diseases (causing loss), production, growth in various countries, composition (as affected by various factors), maturity standards (for harvesting), harvesting, commercial handling, and storage. Factors causing crop loss are reviewed, including infectious diseases (fungal, bacterial, viral), nematodes, and pests. Factors affecting fruit composition are discussed: rootstock characteristics, climate, tree age and density, nutrient status effects (e.g., phosphorus, potassium, calcium, nitrogen, trace elements, vitamin C), growth regulators, chemical sprays, and growth and maturation effects. Harvesting, handling, grading, and storage procedures are reviewed. Control of post-harvest diseases and changes in chemical constituents during storage are discussed.
