Quality of soybeans in export

Soyabean shipments originating from the USA, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina were sampled in Europe and Asia between 1985 and 1989. The samples were graded, protein and oil contents determined and oil quality characteristics assessed. Test wt (TW, lb/bu) was consistently lower for S. American soyabeans than USA crops while seed moisture content (%) remained constant regardless of source or year. The number of damaged and split seeds were lower in 1986-88 than in 1985 in USA soyabeans due to favourable harvest conditions and improved post-harvest handling. The proportion of damaged seed was consistently higher in Brazilian seed in 1988 and 1989 but the amount of foreign material in shipments was much lower than in the USA shipments. In 1988-89 av. protein content of USA soyabeans was 0.5-1.3% lower and av. oil content 1.4% lower than those for Brazilian and Paraguayan soyabeans. Crude oil from the USA showed free fatty acid contents (%) below the National Oilseed Processor Associations max., but the oil P contents were consistently higher than those from other origins. It is suggested that the USA farmers and exporters continue efforts to improve the physical characteristics of soyabeans for export with an emphasis on breeding and genetic engineering research.
