Further studies on the effect of certain crops on succeeding crops
1948
Odland, T.E. | Smith, J.B.
Results are reported for the period 1930-42 on the effects of 11 different preceding crops on potatoes, mangels, rutabagas, and onions. Some of these crops had detrimental effects on certain following crops. No crop was uniformly deleterious to all successive crops and none was uniformly beneficial to all following crops. Some crops gradually produced an unfavorable condition for certain succeeding crops over a period of years; other crops produced a deleterious condition in a single year. Partial soil sterilization with chloropicrin increased yields of mangels, but the deleterious effects of a previous crop of mangels still was in evidence. These results present further evidence that a single factor is not responsible for the deleterious effects of certain crops on succeeding ones but that a number of factors are involved.
