An overview is presented on the effectiveness of weight-loss clinics, with emphasis placed on the health educator's role to provide appropriate guidance to consumers concerning the efficacy of such clinics. This role focuses on disseminating information needed for the establishment of scientific criteria and evaluating the efficiency of programs conducted by consumer weight-loss clinics. An evaluative model to this end is described.
