This editorial by the editor-in-chief of this journal reviews papers from the symposium on infant nutrition which are included in this journal issue. Papers discussed are as follows: 1) Impact of development of the gut on infant nutrition; 2) A rational approach to infant formulas; 3) An algorithm for pediatric enteral alimentation; 4) TNP cholestasis in premature infants--the role of parenternal nutrition solutions; 5) and breath tests as a diagnostic technique for malabsorption. A brief review is included on infant feeding within the past 100 years to the present when mother's milk was insufficient, i.e., wet-nurses and its problems to formulas, respectively.(rah)
