Mechanical Scarification of Cicer Milkvetch (Astragalus Cicer L.) Seed
1972
Townsend, C. E. | McGinnies, W. J.
Seed of Astragalus cicer L. was subjected to 30 scarification treatments. The treatments were: the number of times passed through the scarifier (1 through 5); air pressures (2.8, 4.2, and 5.6 kg/cm²); and abrasives (fine and coarse). Seed coat permeability, as measured by percentage germination, was significantly influenced by number of times scarified and air pressure but not by abrasive. However, all factors influenced the percentage of damaged seeds. The most satisfactory treatment was to pass the seeds through the scarifier five times at the 2.8 kg/cm² pressure with the fine abrasive. This treatment reduced the percentage hard seed from 54% to 1% without damaging seeds.
