Changes in quantitative markers in Drosophial during prolonged selection

Prolonged artificial selection for increases or decreases in quantitative markers was carried out in laboratory populations of Drosophila, for 60 generations. The efficiency of selection was determined in terms of the genetic structure of the initial population, and decreased gradually over 30 generations. Different quantitative markers responded differently to selection at the same level of intensity. Changes in the mean number of abdominal bristles and the length of the thorax, after approximately 30 generations of selection showed that the experimental subpopulations reach a plateau. The phenotypic variability of both quantitative markers varied during selection, though the duration of selection did not produce significant change in the total level of variability of the markers studied.
