Zinc absorption in the rat determined by radioisotope dilution

Abstract: Young and mature rats received various levels of dietary zinc for two weeks, and they were then injected intramuscularly with radioactive zinc. After nine days, urine and feces were collected and analyzed for five days, and then the rats were killed for intestine and kidney analysis. The specific radioactivity of these two organs decreased as dietary zinc increased. In both mature rats and young rats fed the highest concentration of dietary zinc, endogenous zinc excretion was greatest. Comparing the same dietary zinc level, mature rats absorbed as much or more zinc than young rats. Zinc homeostasis in rats is maintained by zinc secretion from the intestine rather than by regulating zinc absorption.
