Zinc balances in men and the zinc requirements of Indian adults

Extract: Zinc (Zn) balances were conducted in young men in 2 sets of experiments. In the 1st set, 5 men were given a basal diet providing 50 g protein and 2600 kcal and 7 mg of Zn per day. Only the Zn content of this diet was increased by the addition of ZnSO4 to the basal diet. In the 2nd study, a diet providing 70 g protein and 2600 kcal per day was given to 4 men; the Zn content of this diet was varied by the inclusion of food sources of Zn to provide 4 levels of Zn. The inorganic Zn in the 1st experiment was not well absorbed, and there was no relation between intake and Zn balance. In the 2nd study, the organically-bound dietary Zn was found to be well absorbed, and Zn retention increased with increased intake. There was a significant linear correlation between Zn intake and Zn balance. From this, the minimum intake of Zn required for balance was found to be 7.07 mg per day. If possible sweat losses also are considered, a daily intake of 8.5 mg of Zn in required to keep adult males in Zn balance. (author/wz)
