Extract: Current major issues related to school foodservice are identified and discussed. The future challenge of child nutrition programs is to integrate these programs into a nationwide health assurance system. Problems with program evaluation arise because of lack of agreement on criteria for nutritional health, questions about the relationship between school foodservice policy and agricultural policy, need for definitions of program effectiveness, and difficulties in assessing factors affecting participation. School foodservice is discussed from a number of perspectives: as a food delivery system; as a nutrient delivery system; and as a food, nutrition, and health education delivery system.
