Controlled photocatalytic activity of modified PTFE fiber-Fe complex through layer-by-layer self-assembly of poly diallyldimethyl ammonium choloride and poly styrene sulfonate

A poly diallyldimethyl ammonium choloride (PDDA)/poly styrene sulfonate (PSS) multilayer was fabricated on the grafted PTFE fiber by a layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly process. And then it coordinated with Fe³⁺ ions to produce the polyelectrolyte modified PTFE fiber Fe complex, which was characterized and used as a heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for the dye degradation under visible irradiation. Effect of PDDA/PSS bilayers on the Fe content and photocatalytic activity of the resulting complexes was also investigated. The results indicated that the same amount of polyelectrolyte was deposited in every dipping cycle and the multilayer was formed on the grafted PTFE fiber in a regular manner. The Fe content of the complex increased with increasing number of PSS/PDDA bilayers, and the complex with eight bilayers obtained the highest Fe content. Higher Fe³⁺ ion initial concentration can also increase the Fe content of the complex. The photocatalytic activity of the modified PTFE fiber Fe complex could be significantly improved through the assembling with PDDA/PSS bilayers, and greatly dependent on increasing number of the bilayers.
