Apple tree development affected by soil texture and vertical soil volume

Effects of soil texture and vertical soil volume on above and below ground development of ‘Fuji’ apple trees was studied by using root boxes. The texture of the root growth medium (clay vs. loam) had a larger effect on tree development than the vertical volume of the soil. The number of absorbing roots and skeleton roots was increased as vertical soil volume increased. Root length and the number of growth roots was increased with increasing vertical soil volume, but the number of root tips decreased as soil volume increased. That resulted in an increase of skinny roots. The development of the underground part of the tree directly affected the development of the above ground canopy. All of the underground development indices were increased with the increase of vertical soil volume. With increasing vertical soil volume, tree height was increased and the number of flower buds was increased. The effect of vertical soil depth had a more pronounced effect on the vertical distribution of roots than the horizontal distribution of roots.
