Ammonia and nitrate studies of lakes near Madison, Wisconsin

The results show that variations in the different forms of nitrogen and soluble phosphorus in the water of these lakes are largely due to the biological activities. The algae, weeds, and nitrate-reducing bacteria are the essential factors that lower the nitrogen and phosphorus content of the lakes. The nitrifying bacteria aid in increasing the nitrate content. Large amounts of spring waters after heavy rains influence the chemical and bacterial content of the lakes.
