Riboflavin requirement of rural women and children

Supplementation sufficient to satisfy the riboflavin (Rb) RDA failed to normalize erythrocyte glutathione reductase (EGR) activation in malnourished, lactating, rural Gambian women and rural Indian children. In a 19-month Gambian study, riboflavin status of 156 pregnant and lactating women were measured by the EGR test and dietary Rb intake. Supplementation of lactating women with Rb reduced the EGR activation coefficient to a mean of 1.42. However, persistence of biochemical Rb deficiency despite adequate dietary Rb intake suggested that the Rb requirement of rural Gambian women may be higher than its RDA. Findings were comparable to those found for rural children in India, where administration of 4 mg Rb/day for 1 month failed to normalize the EGR activation coefficient in almost 50% of the children. The results of these studies suggest that the exact Rb requirement of communities living in unfavorable environmental condititions is yet to be determined. (wz)
