Moose harvest strategy to maximize yield value for multiple goal management--a simulation study

Different sex- and age-selective harvesting strategies were evaluated in a simulated moose population in south-central Sweden. Yield was quantified in terms of the products number of moose shot, meat yield and number of trophy males shot. Goal preferences, reflected by the relation between economic weights of the products determined which strategy was optimal. In general, the maximal yield value for multiple goal management was provided in the population consisting of the highest proportion of adult females (two per adult male) in which the harvest of 2-5-year-old males was reduced. The proportion of calves in the harvest was of less importance. Recommendation of the strategy that maximizes a single product, such as number of trophy males shot, may only be appropriate if the economic weight for the maximized product is high enough to compensate for the reduced yield of the other products (moose shot and meat).
