Effect of dietary energy density on food intake of preschool children in one meal

Extract: The interaction between energy density, food intake and energy content was studied in preschool children. The study was carried out in 240 healthy children aged 2 to 4 years attending two day care centers in Santiago, Chile. The food and energy intake corresponding to 8 different types of lunches (main meal) was studied in 30 children per day during 8 non consecutive days. Basically the meals were composed of cereals, legumes and tubers. The total amount of food consumed was heterogeneous. The lowest values were observed in those children who were receiving the meals based on cereals. The adequacy of energy ranged from 14.6 to 29.9% and only one meal reached a percentage of 30 which should be considered a goal if the energy needs are to be fulfilled. The regression between energy density (x) and food intake was inverse and highly significant : y= 34.27 - 9.42X; r= -0.499. For those consuming the high energy density meal the regression was also significant : y= 81.88 - 34.28X; r= - 0.678. The results presented have important implications on the recommendations related to adequate energy density values and for the formulation of nutritionally adequate meals. (author/wz)
