Decreased skeletal muscle insulin receptors in high-fat diet-related hypertensive rats

We investigated the number of insulin receptors in skeletal muscle in long-term high fat-fed hypertensive rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a high-fat (FAT) diet or a high-carbohydrate (CHO) diet. After 16 wk of feeding, the total weight of the adipose tissue deposits was significantly higher in the FAT diet treated group than in the CHO diet treated group. Plasma insulin and glucose levels, blood pressure (BP) and urinary excretion of norepinephrine and epinephrine were significantly higher in the FAT diet treated group. The numbers of insulin receptor in soleus and gastrocnemius muscles were significantly fewer in the FAT diet treated group. These results suggest that the decrease in the number of skeletal muscle insulin receptors may be associated with severe insulin resistance and FAT diet-related BP elevation.
