Bone mineral status in 18 children deficient in growth hormone was monitored before and during exogenous human growth hormone (hGH) therapy, utilizing photon absorptiometry. Bone mineral content (BMC), bone width (BW) and their ratios were all below normal for predicted values prior to treatment; delayed maturation was responsible for 35% of the deficit. The children treated with glucocorticoids showed no significant change. Growth velocity increased significantly with hGH, though there was no change of BW or BMC throughout the study.
