Information on the sugar content of foods is difficult to obtain. Many food processors refuse to divulge any information that is not required for the standard nutrition label. The standard nutrition label format combines starches and sugars in a single carbohydrate category. Most of the sweetners Americans consume come not from the sugar bowl, but from sweet processed foods. Soft drinks contribute 21% to our refined sweetener intake; sweets such as jams, jellies, gelatin desserts, ices, popsicles and table sugar contribute 18 % while bakery products including cakes, pies, pastries and sweet crackers contribute an additional 13%. Sugar is a leading cause of tooth decay, can raise blood cholesterol in "carbohydrate sensitive " individuals and may be responsible for problems in certain hyperactive children. Refined sweeteners in foods and beverages are presented in tabular form.(emc)
