Infant feeding in the less developed countries: an industry viewpoint

The objectives and functions of the International Council of Infant Food Industries (ICIFI) are indicated in this review of the present state of knowledge about infant feeding in less developed countries. Seven main issues are discussed: adequacy of human lactation; feed the mother and thereby the child; breast feeding and child spacing; the decline in breast feeding; the effect of bottle feeding on lactation; the cost of infant formula; and, early supplementation and the risk of infections.
