Though not a problem unique to the trace elements, there is a notable lack of data on which to base precise calculations of trace element requirements. There is, however, a growing appreciation of the need to achieve a better understanding of nutritional requirements for the trace elements. This has stemmed, in part, from the recognition of an increasing number of trace deficiency states, including mild deficiency states that may occur with relatively modest deviations from typical nutrient intakes. Simultaneously with the growing awareness of the potential for trace deficiencies, an increasing awareness of the interactions that can occur between different trace elements and between trace elements and other nutrients has developed. Hence, supplementation/fortification programs require due caution and certainly are not a substitute for future research designed to enhance understanding of trace element requirements. Before considering what is known about trace element requirements of the older infant, the effects of trace element deficiencies and the circumstances in which they occur will be reviewed briefly.
