Accuracy of genetic evaluations in dominance genetic models allowing for inbreeding

SUMMARY: The effect of dominance on the accuracy of genetic evaluation was investigated by selection index theory. Three different prediction models were used: a purely additive model, a complete model including dominance and an approximate model (complete only for non-inbred population). Other variables were number of fullsibs, allele frequency and an amount of environmental variance. The complete model including dominance gave better accuracies than both the purely additive model and the approximate model. The difference between the complete model and other models was considerable only when dominance variance was large compared to additive variance (dominant allele was common) and when there was a small amount of environmental variation. An increase in number of full-sibs increased this difference. At most the difference between the models was 8%. The frequency of recessive alleles is probably low in production traits, such as the number of offspring, connected to fitness. The main component of genetic variance in these traits could therefore be dominance variance and some gains could be achieved in considering dominance in their genetic evaluation routines.
