The performance of syringe pumps in unsaturated horizontal column experiments

The ability of syringe pumps to maintain constant inlet water content in horizontal unsaturated soil column experiments was evaluated. A series of tests was performed with two different soils. Results of these tests show similarity to experiments conducted using the traditional constant pressure reservoir inlet described by Bruce and Klute (The measurement of soil moisture diffusivity. 1956. Soil Sci. Am. Proc. 20:458–462). This suggests that the boundary condition of constant inlet potential devised by Bruce and Klute was also present in tests conducted using the syringe pump. Similarity of tests conducted with different numbers of syringes shows that radial flow effects resulting from injecting solution at points rather than continuously along the inlet surface are negligible. Syringe pumps provide a significant advantage over reservoir procedures since they can provide a more extensive range of inlet moisture contents for the inlet boundary condition.
