The course outline is presented of an educational program for students concerning hunger and nutrition and the need to assist hungry people. The program was based on looseleaf resource materials for teachers on hunger and nutrition prepared and updated cooperatively by a team of parents and teachers. The course addresses 5 related topics: the definition and qualification of hunger; the types of people who are hungry; programs that help the hungry; the delineation of an adequate diet; and why hunger is a problem in the US. Using this course, students have the opportunity to gain an understanding of the dimensions and complexities of hunger and learn that the foods they donate are very important in helping people in emergency situations. Students also learn that donated, canned foods do not cure poverty, but merely alleviate its symptom, hunger. Examples are given of suggested classroom activities for elementary, junior, and high school students for each of the 5 topics covered in the course. A listing of available, supportive films also is provided. (wz)
