Search for resistance to Verticillium-wilt and leaf spot in olive

Verticillium-wilt caused by Verticillium dahliae Kleb. and "leaf spot" caused by Spilocaea oleagina (Cast.) Hugh. are the most destructive fungal diseases of olive (Olea europea L. ) in southern Italy. In the framework of a study on the improvement of olive crops in southern Italy investigations on olive resistance to Verticillium-wilt and "leaf spot" were carried out. Germplasm originating from seed of wild and cultivated olives showed a wide range of reactions to Verticillium-wilt and some accessions exhibited characteristics of resistance. In tests with self-rooted cuttings, the cv DA 12 I showed high characteristics of resistance. Studies on the reaction of olive germplasm to “leaf spot” included investigations in olive orchards in several areas of southern Italy and screenings of fifteen olive lines in greenhouse with artificial inoculations. Under natural infection, in the field, the cvs Carolea and Cassanese resulted highly susceptible, cv Leccino and a local accession of cv Nocellara del Belice showed an intermediate susceptibility, whereas the local cultivar cv Roggianella was highly resistant. In greenhouse tests no disease symptoms were observed on plants of the cv Nostrale del Rigali.
