Phosphorus, calcium, pectin and carbohydrate fractions in varieties of watermelon

A total of ten different varieties of watermelon were studied in four replications, each under industrial greenhouse conditions. Leaves were sampled every 15 days throughout the biological cycle in order to determine the different fractions of calcium (soluble, bound, inorganic and organic), phosphorus (inorganic, organic, lipidic, RNA, DNA and proteinic), carbohydrates (total, saccharose, glucose, fructose and starch) and pectins (soluble, pectates, protopectins and total). Levels of the different Ca and P fractions varied from one variety to another. The lowest concentration of soluble Ca was recorded in the Resistent variety, which on the other hand contained the highest levels of bound, inorganic and organic fractions, making it the variety with the highest total Ca content. All fractions of P, and hence total P concentration, were highest in the Panonia variety, while the Carmit variety was found to contain highest levels of carbohydrates (all fractions and total). With regard to pectin, total levels were greatest in the Perla-Negra (Black-Pearl) variety, although the pectate fraction was the smallest found in all varieties. Despite individual variations in the evolution of leaf carbohydrate levels in the course of the biological cycle, all varieties showed a decline as senescence approached. Total pectins in the leaf rose with plant age until the beginning of foliar senescence, when levels fell in all varieties.
