Effects of solar irradiation and night-time temperature on the thinning efficacy of metamitron (Brevis®) in apple

Trials with metamitron (Brevis®) were conducted at different phenological stages of apple fruit (7-18 mm fruit diameter) in the 2014-2016 seasons. Within each season, the same dosages were used at all application dates for all tested cultivars. On the basis of the obtained results a model was developed in order to estimate the efficacy of Brevis® at the established treatment. Metamitron causes a measurable reduction of electron transport in photosystem II for about 10 days, leading to a reduced photosynthetic output. In addition when elevated night-time temperatures (>10°C) occur a further fruit abscission can be enhanced.
