Nutritional properties of poppyseed oil relative to some other oils

Male Wistar rats were fed a purified basal diet with 20% lard and corn oil (3:1), sunflower oil, poppyseed oil, rapeseed oil, cultivar Tower, or mixtures of these oils for 1 or 26 weeks. At 1 week no heart lipidosis was exhibited. At 26 weeks, the serum triglyceride level was higher in rats fed the mixture of lard and corn oil than in those fed only vegetable oil. The rats fed rapeseed oil showed higher incidence of cardiac necrosis and fibrosis. Cardiac phospholipids were elevated in the rapeseed-fed rats. Poppyseed oil showed properties similar to sunflower oil and was absorbed as well as olive oil. With the recent development of poppy with a low morphine content, the oil appears promising for human consumption.
