The Effects of Transnational Environmentalism on Domestic Environmental Coalitions: Thick Conservation Networks and Thin Pollution Networks in Ecuador
2011
Lewis, Tammy L.
Ecuador's environmental movement has engaged in the international environmental network since 1978. This article examines how transnationalism has affected Ecuadorian environmental organizations by comparing two issue networks: the conservation network and the pollution network. Data from an on-line organizational survey of Ecuadorian organizations and interviews show that the transnational conservation network, a resource-rich vertical network, has encouraged the growth of horizontal/domestic networks in Ecuador, but the domestic network is dysfunctional. By contrast, the relatively poor transnational pollution network did not generate growth in horizontal/domestic networks. Instead, independent organizations emerged domestically. This organizational network may prove more functional.
