Barley water babies a commerciogenic condition?
1978
Schweiger, Martin | Cutting, William A.M.
The combination of poverty, ignorance and the incorrect use of barley water leading to protein energy malnutrition (PEM) may be called the Barley Water Syndrome. Clinical features of afflicted babies are described, and the etiology and management of the syndrome are discussed. Barley water is advertised for babies and successfully marketed in Bangladesh. Its misuse results in what can be described asas a variation of commerciogenic malnutrition. The manufacturers have agreed to advertising changes. A table compares protein and energy content of feeds.
