Efficacy of a commercial mycotoxin binder in alleviating haematological changes in experimental ochratoxicosis in broilers

An experimental study was undertaken to study the efficacy of Toxi Bind Dry in alleviating the toxic effects of ochratoxin A, when fed in broiler diet. A total of 100, day old commercial Vencob broilers were randomly divided into four groups of twenty-five chicks each. Feeding of the test diets commenced from day one and continued till the termination of experiment on 42ⁿᵈ day of age. In ochratoxin-A fed birds (OCA group), there was significant reduction in Haemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), total erythrocyte counts (TEC) and heterophilia at early stage of intoxication (14ᵗʰ day). However, heterophilia was not consistent at later stages (28ᵗʰ and 42ⁿᵈ day intervals). Lymphocyte, monocyte, basophil and eosinophil counts remained unaltered throughout the study. Blood coagulation time was significantly elevated at all intervals. Birds fed OA along with Toxi Bind Dry (binder) in the diet showed partial protection in terms of Hb, PCV, blood coagulation time. However, binder failed to improve TEC values and altered Heterophil counts (at 14ᵗʰ day). Results of the present study indicated that addition of toxin binder along with OA in the diet had partial ameliorating effects on haematological parameters.
