Process Optimization for the Preparation of Beta-cyhalothrin Microspheres by Using the Response Surface Methodology

Microcapsulses can effectively encapsulate, protect, and control the release of insecticides. In this study, emulsion–solvent evaporation method was used to fabricate microcapsules (MCs) by using beta-cyhalothrin as the entrapped insecticide, dichloromethane as the solvent, polylactic acid (PLA) as the carrier materials, and polyvinyl alcohol as the emulsifier. Response surface methodology was used to determine the optimal process of beta-cyhalothrin MCs, the specific parameters are as follows: 0.52 g beta-cyhalothrin, 0.46 g PLA, 6.67 g dichloromethane and 0.37 g PVA. The fabricated beta-cyhalothrin MCs were characterized through microscopic morphology observation, particle size and distribution analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The release kinetics in the acetonitrile and the bioassay of beta-cyhalothrin MCs were investigated. The results showed that the beta-cyhalothrin was successfully encapsulated in the PLA. The beta-cyhalothrin MCs showed a regular spherical structure, relatively uniform particle size, and the D₅₀ was 2.44 μm. Compared to the technical beta-cyhalothrin, the beta-cyhalothrin MCs showed good sustained release performance and prolonged the control effect against Blattella germanica.
