Excerpts from a study that shows the school lunch program improves the nutritional intake of children, regardless of income level, are presented. Comparisons were made between program participants and non-participants. The well-balanced meals which offer a variety of foods, required by federal regulations, appear to be responsible for improved nutrient intake. The same cannot be said for the breakfast program because it is only functioning in 39% of the school districts. School meals appear to supplement food intake rather than supplant it. The meal cost is still the biggest determinant of participation. Legislative changes have resulted in closer scrutiny of applicants for free and reduced priced meals, but at any price a school lunch is a bargain. A number of ways managers are trying to increase or maintain participation are described. (kbc)
