The importance of obesity in the development of coronary risk factors and disease: the epidemiologic evidence

A review of epidemiological studies summarizes and discusses pertinent evidence for obesity and related risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD). Specific attention is focused on: major CHD risk factors (total and lipoprotein cholesterol levels and patterns; elevated blood pressure and hypertension); the incidence and patterns of CHD; and guidelines for CHD prevention. It is concluded that the available evidence indicates that obesity exerts pronounced effects on the major CHD risk factors, and that obesity (or increased weight-for-height) plays a major fundamental role in the development of symptomatic CHD. The results of prospective epidemiological studies in North American populations studied more than 4 years are tabulated.(wz)
