AN Assessment of the performance of dermestes maculatus degeer (coleoptera, dermestidae) in some dietary media

A comparative assessment has been made of the biological performance of Dermestes maculatus Degeer in various dietary media, namely dried fish, fish meal, bone meal, palm kernel meal, blood meal and wholemeal. The main parameters used were body size and weight of fully grown larvae, number of adult emergents, sex ratio, fecundity of females and longevity of adults in each medium. On all these criteria, dried fish followed by fish meal, was found to be significantly superior to the commercial feeds. It is suggested that the greater suitability of the dried fish diet for the development and biological performance of the beetle may be attributable to its superior nutritional composition in respect of crude proteins, total lipids and water content, among other factors.
